There are 698 islands, 389 islets and 78 reefs along the Croatian coast, including two national parks – Kornati and Mljet. The Croatian coast is the most indented in Europe. Dalmatia, a geographical and historical region in southern Croatia. As a geographical region, it is also called the Southern Croatian Littoral; it covers the area of four counties (Zadar – without the Lika part, Šibenik-Knin, Split-Dalmatia and Dubrovnik-Neretva counties).

The North Dalmatian islands are more numerous and, except for Pag, smaller. They are elongated and run parallel to the coast and the mountain range in the hinterland, in the northwest-southeast direction (the so-called Dinaric direction of relief, or the Dalmatian type of coast). Prominent examples of this type of coast are Pag, Ugljan, Pašman, Dugi otok, Kornat and Žirje. The open mainland coast around Cape Ploče near Rogoznica, as the boundary of Northern and Central Dalmatia, or Central and Southern Adriatic Croatia, separates them from the Central Dalmatian islands, which are larger and run west-east (the Hvar direction of relief). These are Hvar, Brač, Šolta, Korčula, Vis, Lastovo and Čiovo. Northwest of Vis are the offshore islets of Jabuka and Brusnik, which are of volcanic origin. The southernmost islands – Mljet and the Elaphite Islands and the Pelješac peninsula run in the Dinaric direction, northwest-southeast.
