Brač is an island in Croatia in the Adriatic Sea in front of Split. With an area of 395 km2, it is the largest island in Dalmatia and the third largest island in the Adriatic Sea. It is 6 to 13 km from the mainland by the Brač Channel (maximum depth 78m). To the west, it is separated from the island of Šolta by the Split Gate, and to the south by the Hvar Channel (depth 91 m). The highest peak is Vidova gora, which is also the highest peak of all the Adriatic islands (778 m/nm).

It is separated from the mainland by the Brač Channel, from Šolta by the Split Gate, and from Hvar by the Hvar Channel. It stretches in a west-east direction. The island is exposed to the south, the bora (the so-called Vruljska bora between Pučišće and Povlja), and in the summer months to the maestral wind. In addition to bathing (the most famous is the Zlatni rat beach in Bol), rural, cultural, recreational, nautical and gastronomic tourism is developing. Its development is facilitated by ferry lines (Split–Supetar and Makarska–Sumartin) and ship connections (Split–Milna–Hvar–Vis and Split–Bol–Jelsa); yacht docks are located in Milna (marina) and Supetar. Since 1993, Brač has also had an airport, which is located in the interior of the island, north of Bol. As an island, Brač stands out for its number of libraries. According to statistics, the average is 5 books per capita, which makes the island one of the areas best covered in books.
