Hvar is an island in Croatia, off the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. It belongs to the group of Central Dalmatian islands. Hvar belongs to the group of Central Dalmatian islands. It is located in the Split-Dalmatia County, in the middle of a group of islands that are part of this county. To the north is the sea of the Hvar Channel, and to the south are the Vis, Korčula and Neretva Channels. It is 67.5 km long (the longest Croatian island), up to 10.5 km wide. Tourism is most developed in the town of Hvar, Jelsa, Stari Grad and Vrboska. All major towns on the island are connected by an asphalt road. In the very heart of Hvar town is the largest square in Dalmatia, Trg sv. St. Stephen's Square, also known as the 15th century Pjaca, near which is the beautiful 16th century Summer House of the poet Hanibal Lucić. Visitors should not miss a tour of the city fortress, the 16th century Fortica, the Loggia with the clock tower, as well as the Arsenal and the oldest public theater in Europe, opened in 1612.
It is connected by ferry lines via Hvar and the Vira Bay, Sućuraj (Drvenik–Sućuraj) and Stari Grad to larger Croatian ports, surrounding islands and Ancona and Pescara (Italy). Marinas are located in Vrboska and Sveti Klement (Palmižana).
