Korčula is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea off the Dalmatian coast. The island belongs to the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. It lies southwest of the Pelješac peninsula (separated by the Pelješac Channel; 1.2 km wide at its narrowest point), south of the islands of Hvar and Šćedra, east of Vis and north of Lastovo. It stretches in an east-west direction; it is 46.8 km long, up to 7.6 km wide. The highest hills are Klupca with 568 m and Kom with 508 m. It is the sixth largest Adriatic island. Agriculture, fishing, shipbuilding and tourism are developed. The island is well indented with a series of bays and coves.
The northern coast is relatively low, easily accessible and has several natural harbors protected from the south and east winds: Korčula, Banja, Račišće, Vrbovica, Babina, Prigradica. The southern coast is more indented, but steep in places: here there are rocks up to 30 m above the sea, there are many anchorages and bays sheltered from the north wind, but exposed to the south: Zavalatica, Rasohatica, Orlanduša, Pavja luka, Pupnatska luka, Prižba, Grščica, etc., and Brna is also sheltered from the south. The largest, best protected bay is Vela Luka on the far western part of the island. The old town of Korčula is one of the best preserved medieval island towns in the Mediterranean.
