The island of Murter is today a tourist destination with numerous cultural and historical sights, natural beaches and uninhabited islands in the immediate vicinity. It is connected to the Adriatic Tourist Road by an asphalt road (6 kilometers), and is 29 km from Šibenik. The island is also imbued with a rich history, as evidenced by the numerous remains of various buildings from the ancient and medieval eras. It had various roles, from a resort during the Roman Empire to a defensive and surveillance function during the rule of the Venetian Republic.
