The Croatian Zagorje is a cultural and historical Croatian region and a separate natural and geographical entity in the northwestern part of Croatia, a hilly area framed by Medvednica and Sava in the south, the Sutla River in the west, the Drava River in the north and Kalnik in the east. A predominantly hilly area between Medvednica, Kalnik, the Drava, Sutla and Sava rivers, the central part of which, in a west-east direction, is covered by the Maceljska gora – Strahinjščica – Ivanščica – Varaždinsko-topličko gorje mountain range, which divides Zagorje into two parts – north and south. The northern part of Zagorje includes most of Varaždin County, and the southern part includes Krapina-Zagorje County and a small part of Zagreb County. To the west, Zagorje is connected to Slovenian Styria, or the areas of Obsotelj and Kozjansko, across the Sutla River, while the Macelj Mountains, or Macelj, are the Croatian-Slovenian mountains.
The Croatian Zagorje is one of the most beautiful and richest Croatian regions, home to historical buildings, a wealth of tourist attractions and natural beauty – forests, castles and manors, museums, thermal springs, churches, trails, vineyards and wine routes, delicious food, kind people, stories, legends and "Zagorje songs". The sanctuary of Our Lady of Bistrička is located on the northern side of Medvednica and is a frequent tourist destination.
I am afraid of aeroplanes. I've been able to avoid flying for some time, but I suppose, if I had to, I would. Perhaps it's a case of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. At one time, I had a pilot's licence and 160 hours of solo time on single-engine light aircraft. Unfortunately, all that seemed to do was make me mistrust large aeroplanes.
The business of biomedical research is mostly about failure. Few projects we commission will ultimately result in success. But every study we do contributes to the body of knowledge that brings science and society closer to a solution.
