The town of Bjelovar is located northeast of Zagreb in the foothills of Bilogora. It was first mentioned in 1420. The main square harmonizes with the baroque churches of St. Therese and the Holy Spirit. It is an economic, cultural, medical and educational centre of the Lonja-Ilova depression and the Bilogora Podravina area. In the past the area was known as becoming the venue of many battles, against Mongolians, Tartars and Turks. In the Vojna krajina era there happened many clashes between the local military and commanders and after the military
uprising of 1755, the ruler Maria Therese decided for strategic reasons to start developing the city of Bjelovar, the centre of today's county. The city developed alongside the defence against the Turks. Following calls made out by the military authorities, craftsmen from Austria and the Czech Republic arrived organising fairs and their associations. Bjelovar was made a free royal city, as one of the youngest cities in 1874. You will surely remember your stay in Bjelovar and its central park on the Eugen Kvaternik Sguare.
It is the most beautiful square in continental Croatia for the second year in the row, and Bjelovar is proclaimed to be the third most beautiful town in continental Croatia. In June in Bjelovar "Terazijana" takes place. It is a several days long traditional, culture-entertaining and tourist manifestation. It consists of sport bicycle and archery competitions, unusual records and fashion shows, concerts and stage presentation.
