Labin was founded on the site of the Roman settlement of Albona. From 1295 it was under the rule of the Counts of Pazin, and from 1381 under the Patriarch of Aquileia. From 1420 to 1797 it was under the rule of Venice, and then it was annexed by Austria. For a long time, the key activity in the development of Labin and the surrounding area was mining, and coal was produced. Mining led to the establishment of mining settlements in nearby Raša, as well as Vinež and Labin. The urban part of Labin is 2 km as the crow flies from the sea, and 3 km from the tourist resort of Rabac on the eastern coast of Istria.

The Old Town is located on a hill, and the other part of the town below it is known as Podlabin (originally established as a mining settlement in the 1930s). The state road connecting Rijeka and Pula passes through Labin. The nearest airport is in Pula and is 40 km away. The nearest railway line is Lupoglav - Pazin - Pula. The nearest ferry port is Brestova with lines to the island of Cres, and the commercial port of Bršica is near Trget.
