Nikšić, a city in Montenegro, in the Zeta River Valley. The Zeta River rises in the Nikšić Plain and flows near the city of Nikšić, before becoming an underground river south of the city. Nikšić has the largest area of all municipalities in Montenegro (covering 15% of Montenegro) and includes 129 settlements. Nikšić is an important industrial center with a large steel plant, ironworks, brewery, sawmills, woodworking factories and a hydroelectric power plant. Bauxite is obtained from one of the largest mines in Europe. The planned development of underdeveloped Montenegro after World War II brought Nikšić new buildings, parks and service projects. An ancient Roman bridge crosses the Zeta, and there are still ruins of Anagastum and another settlement in nearby Zavrh. Around the old church of St. Peter is the cemetery of the heretical Bogomil sect, which died out in the late Middle Ages. Nikšić has a local museum and the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Montenegro is located in the city. The museum was founded in 1951 and is located in the Palace of King Nikola.
