Zagreb County is located in northwestern Croatia. It borders the City of Zagreb on the west, south, and east, so it is often called the "Zagreb Ring". Geographically, it is quite a diverse entity with the Marijagorica Hills and Žumberak in the west, the lowlands of Turopolje and Pokuplje in the south, and lowlands in the east. In the west, hilly and mountainous areas predominate, while in the south and east there are lowlands. The highest parts are Žumberačka gora and Samoborsko gorje in the southwest and the edge of Medvednica in the north. In the south, the low Vukomeričke gorice hills separate the low Turopolje from the lower Pokuplje. The largest plains extend to the east, in the basin of the Lonja River. In terms of area and population, Zagreb County has for years been one of the political and development centers with its numerous natural resources and economic potential.
